Household vehicles provide by far the greatest market opportunity for new transportation fuels. But penetrating the household market will be difficult and slow even when the fuel is less expensive than gasoline. The following three factors are the principal deterrents to penetration of the large household transportation fuels market: the lack of growth potential in the vehicle fuels market, the absence of a network of retail outlets for the new fuels, and the conservative nature of vehicle purchase decisions. Each of these factors and their implications for alcohol fuels are elaborated upon in this paper.
