In order to limit temperature change to below 2 degrees Celsius, the world will need to transition to near-zero emissions across the global energy system by no later than 2060 (IPCC, 2018). Transportation around the world will need to be part of this, and transition to a sustainable near zero carbon energy system. This will require implementing new types of vehicles and fuels, as well as travel behavioral change. This virtual special issue considers this challenge through a range of new research, focusing on both the developing and developed world, and across a range of modes and emissions-related challenges and strategies.
