Abstract:The renewal of the Inter-modal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, ISTEA, has entered the final phases of debate in the US Congress and Senate. Anticipating this debate the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis hosted a workshop on May 31, 1997 for leaders in the transportation industry, planning and academic community to explore how the debate was shaping up, how the legislation was likely to proceed, and possible last minute policy paths that might be important to push. The workshop included presentations by those working on the ISTEA renewal process. The workshop was attended by over seventy leaders from private industry, state planning agencies, local planning organizations, policy think-tanks, and universities.
