There is growing recognition of the potential effectiveness of telecommuting as both a business response to internal problems and a transportation demand management strategy. This article, in its examination of telecommuting in the United States, addresses the following two questions: Who is telecommuting and why? What has been learned about telecommuting and travel? The article also identifies eight areas where additional research is needed.
